As long everyone is treated the same... and they're not
Yes, SBC should be forced to work Vonage. The ability to call 911 is critical. We can do it on cell phones... why not VOIP?

On the flip side though, anyone providing phone service (Vonage, Comcast, etc), should be regulated just the same as SBC. Telephone service is essential to most people. It's not like satellite or cable TV which are unnecessary luxuries. We're talking about the ability or inability to make a phone call here. Any company that provides this type of essential service should be subject to regulation and public oversight.... period.

I'm not taking SBC's side in the matter because they have their problems too. I am getting tired of the "leave everything internet alone" mentality that is so pervasive among our politicians though. The internet used to be an optional and/or enertainment medium and not exactly an essential part of daily life. It is beginning to pervade our personal space in a big way though. Once it crosses the line and becomes involved with public utilities, it needs to answer to the public. Plain and simple.
