Why Do We Keep Flogging This Dead Horse
It seems the half educated nerds and webheads who run internet companies are determined they will make VOIP a success. Unfortunately like many other hyped technologies "that will change the world," it just will not work.
A point to point voice call needs a permanent virtual circuit, IP is a store and forward protocol that uses switched virtual circuit technology.
(Now I know I am going to get nerds and webheads yelling at me that they make all their voice calls on VOIP and its great. Webheads are so convinced on the invincibility of the internet they don't understand their calls are only wrapped in IP until they reach the local switch. There the lesasxt cost routhing algorithm causes them to break out into the PSTN.
When using a treaming technology over a store and forward medium performance starts to degrade at around 25% loading (and the net is way over that now, with more video on demand traffic being generated) so clearly a massive investment in infrastructure would be required from the Telcos. Yet the VOIP service providers are convinced they can give the service away for free. And after all that has been resolved we have to start addressing the problem of how people wil rea....ct to c......alls that sound someth.......ing like this. Someone just has't thought things through.

Voice networks are a very different animal from the web.
