GE and Thompson
Both GE and RCA brands for home appliances were sold to Thomson at the same time and Thompson has been making both RCA and GE-branded items for years so no poetic sweetness here, just bizness as usual. (And no, GE did not "sell RCA" to Thomson; just as they did not sell themselves, GE. I believe the RCA brand is still owned by GE and licensed to companies like Thomson for home appliances (along, as I said, with the GE brand) and BMG for records (BMG did buy the RCA Records unit).

Still, your instinct is right. People will probably respond favorably to a familiar brand.

But is this BIG news. Not really, I suspect.

And, oh yeah, in case you didn't realize it from what I wrote already -- the biggest reason there won't be product placement on NBC shows or anything like that is that these phones are not in any way made by or owned by the General Electric Co. They are made by and owned by Thomson using the General electric brand.
