You aren't forced to look/listen to ads
You aren't forced to watch/listen to ads in order to earn credits. You can also pay for credits just like you do with SkypeOut. Lycos Phone just gives you another option of earning credits.

Your points about not wanting to see Flash or streaming stuff in your player has some merits, but the software doesn't display Flash or video unless you tell it to. Watching IPTV/videos is a user-initiated process to play something you want to watch.

Personally, I do think the interface needs a little work. It's too wide for my taste. But I can't complain about the ad at the bottom since MSN Messenger also has ads, as do other soft clients.
