Russell, you bring up some interesting points.

I don't think any supplier, whether BlackBerry or other some other technology OEM, should undermine its customer base (carriers) without regard to maximizing shareholder value. However, organizations should realize that communications is no longer mutually exclusive to traditional network providers. The barrier to entry into the telecommunication industry is the cost of building a lightweight thin client (as demonstrated by Skype). More people communicate with each other with free VoIM than the Vonage broadband VoIP model. By my estimates, 20 to 40 time more. Moreover, the real question is what RIM customers want to do in the context of enterprise communications. Effectively voice and the traditional business model behind dial tone are dead. If the user community finds it more effective, efficient, and transparent to initiate phone calls between individuals in a presence-based registry (IM) model versus directory (10-digit telephone number), then the technology supplier should meet the needs of the market and try to capitalize on it. The good news is people communicate more than ever. The price of traditional voice communication and the value of communication should not be confused. I believe what Cingular is demonstrating with Push-to-Talk (PTT) is just a glimpse of the possibilities. If GoogleTalk, Skype, or any of the other real-time voice-enabled IMs adds value in the way people prefer to communicate, the market will reward those who meet the needs of the market. By any metrics it appears that the new real-time rich media voice network externality will be VoIM based and not the VoIP carrier based like Vonage, TWC,and others. These offerings are essentially a more cost optimized (cheaper)way of offering basic dial tone.
