It's all about composition
Thanks for picking up on my mashup and BI hints! Services have differing levels of granularity depending on the IT function and business domain they serve. Services provide discreet value on their own but the real benefits of SOA come when services are mixed, matched, combined, and composited in an application context.

Think of your SOA as a platform -- like an iPhone -- rather than a closed system or boxed product. Build a few open, reusable, "utility" services down below and suddenly you can rapidly combine them into thousands of unique, market-specific offerings. You own the phone, now make it work for everyone, not just those few who happen to have the same needs.
