Interesting assessment
The original blog entry presents a very pragmatic approach to IT. You participated with me on Dana's podcast where I predicted the disposable software trend for 2009. This type of attitude will lead to creation of disposable software trends.

The pragmatic side of me believes this is the most likely approach for many businesses, but the architect side of me knows that this is just another form of debt being incurred.

The debt will called when the pendulum swings back toward growth and those businesses that survived the downturn and focused on putting out fires now realize they have a mess to clean up in IT. The good news for them is that resources will be abundant and cheap to clean this up. The bad news is they may miss market opportunities due to a lower level of productivity caused by lack of appropriate automation.

In the 2001 downturn, IT leaders recommended using the downturn to get the house in order. While it's a hard sell, it keeps morale high and illustrates long term thinking on the part of management. Incurring IT debt by "just keeping the lights on" illustrates short-term thinking and fear on the part of management.
