I think some of the discussion gets confused because of the narrow scope some see integration as being. What was defined as EAI a while back really shared a lot of common traits with SOA. That fact is EAI is not at all about moving data from point A to point B, that was what it was designed to replace in fact. EAI was about abstraction, reuse, common data models and events. Sound familiar?

For folks who really got EAI then SOA is not really a big leap in either technology nor architecture. While I'm not saying EAI is SOA, I'm saying there is a significant amount of shared traits. Evolving to Service Orientation from Enterprise Integration is a natural evolution that does not require re-engineering the empire. That's assuming the EAI was done right in the first place of course.

We do tend to try and throw the baby out with the bath water every time a new buzzword comes along.
