You still need your own datacentre.
In the article it is pointed out that you might need your own, (presumably smaller) datacentre to host your company's confidential or proprietary information.
However, I suspect the reality is a lot worse than that. Your own datacentre must not shrink, because if your cloud relationship comes to an end, and you have to move all your databases, docs and possibly apps to a different provider's cloud, you are going to have to stage that move VIA YOUR OWN DATACENTRE.
In today's "Between The Lines" article, the "Helpstream" company has put its databases and apps onto Amazon, and now expects to spend NOTHING on server hardware. In other words, they expect to let their old datacentre (and all server technicians) fade away. Yet they also have a guarded or cautious view that they could, if ever forced to, move to a different cloud! How, I'd like to know? If Amazon goes kaput, then Amazon isn't going to do it for them!
