ESBs
It really depends on your environment. My company is a medium sized company and we did not have any middleware. For us the ESB made a lot of sense. If you already have middleware, you may not need an ESB. You might be set or you may need to add an XML appliance. Don't do what the guys at Zapthink call, buy "middleware for your middleware".
