Oh Goodness...not another hypefest!
Mashups, like Web 2.0 itself, seem to be a massive hype job built on very thing air with little or nothing to show for it.

In other words, a solution in search of a problem.

Of course, Java itself, while elegant, is often seen in exactly the same way because of, in the past, problems with incredibly slow loading times and execution times on most platforms. There's still a very bad smell around that.

And Java's major problem has been and continues to be far too much empty early hype that that language could never live up to.

As for mashups and Web 2.0 there used to be a name for all this empty hype we ought to revive. Vapourware.
