You gutted your own article
First, no one forces you to update your software, period. There *are* companies that won't support antiques, and who can blame them? Support costs are very high, especially since one person (or team) can't be expected to be expert in a dozen different versions of the software.

Second, what's your point? A money-stream isn't the only reason people create updated software. Security updates are one non-revenue enhancer. MS, for instance, puts them out for *years* after release. For free. Absorbing the cost as a business expense.

Open source people have to do the same, so in what way do the two differ in that respect?

Your whole article falls apart because your central premise is wrong. Here at work we're still running software created in 1998 while the company's released two or three new versions.
