Well . . .
Well . . .

-If Google's stuff goes down, all I can do is
wait.

-If my stuff goes down, I can fix it myself. My
parents can take it to a repair shop.

-My drives? Haven't had an issue in over a
year. Maybe two? I forget when I bought it, but
it's lasting surprisingly long, especially
since I'm running three drives. When SSDs
become more popular, I expect client side
reliability to be very, very good.

-I *do* backup my most important stuff to the
"cloud" via Live Mesh, which also backs stuff
up to my laptop. Since it's really a sync
service, it's a real time backup too!

Only issue with most online services is that
they're limited in size. I can backup my docs
to the "cloud," but space limitations mean you
can forget backing up the music/movie/TV show
collection.

Luckily, though, Live Mesh can skip the cloud
and just sync to my laptop happy.

If it ain't in at least two places you directly
control - it ain't backed up. Online is one way
to have my information in two or more places.
But having it 100% online is not "two places"
in my book.

Client side apps do give a performance
advantage in many cases, considering that
you're not waiting for packets to travel long
distances. Locality has always been a big
factor when it comes to performance.

"bloat" has rarely been a problem due to
technological advances. Especially with current
hardware, the hardware is more than fast enough
for the software. And with recent OSes like
Windows 7 focusing on performance, that's even
less of a problem.
