Linux needs a real mainstream distro
Linux unfortunately is too fragmented to get the attention of
consumers.
Way too many distributions. We think Microsoft is bad with Windows!
But just look at how many our out there of Linux! Hey Linux idiots!
stop doing so many and concentrate on one well supported one for
the desktop. At least then user's will begin to recognize Linux as a OS
of one and not the confusion you are now portraying. Maybe open
source is the problem? I mean once you get corporate involvement
like Red Hat you begin to have more consistent support and that
means more interest.
Doing everything on a volunteer basis does not bring a lot of interests
in a consumer user base that is computer stupid and needs hand
holding to get them through a problem. Message boards do not do
that. Free support by volunteers cannot do that. If you do not change
to a more business model you are doomed to be a geeks OS for his
home built computer. Or the Microsoft hater who would rather suffer
for days or weeks with Linux to get their video working then run
Windows. That's about where LInux is and has always been.
