It's not so much that they can't make it their own...
-- it's that they can't deprive others of the ability to do the same.

After all, RedHat, Ubuntu, Mandriva, Firefox, OpenOffice, OpenSceneGraph, Gnumeric, Snort IDS, and too many others to list have "made Free/Open Source Software their own" -- and many make money from it, too. But anyone else can do the same -- it's not locked away from the world, like free-fallen water kept behind a private dam.
