There's plenty of people who are "here today, gone tomorrow" ripping off all sorts of code, be it open source or proprietary, not to mention lots of other things besides code. And the taunting response is quite typical too.

The owners can only do what they can to protect their product, and not every offender will be punished. The thing is, one should not be defeatist. I'm sure there's some creative ideas out there that will help with code thieves. Maybe people will offer some up.
