RE: How much do desktops matter?
Some futurist whose name I forget once predicted that computers would eventually "disappear". This does not mean that they would suddenly go poof and we would have no more computers. Rather, they would no longer be defined by the big ugly box on our desk in the basement office, where we would go to do office homework, pay bills, and kill aliens that stole our chicks. They would vanish into devices that we used in our daily lives: Phones, Televisions, TV recording devices, games, etc. In my household, the big ugly box still exists, but it is now under a desk in the main recreation/home entertainment room of the house. It is my home theatre, TV recorder, music, news source, communication device, etc. I don't have a laptop and use a cell phone for the archaic function of calling home to see if we need milk. I can see a future where the "desktop" with all its power, speed, and flexibility, will be harbored in a closet in the basement, and the interfaces will be spread throughout the house, car, ipods, cell phones, television sets, game interfaces, etc. We will access our data online, use web servers, our own server, libraries, stores, etc. with a multitude of devices. Of course, every once in a while you will have to take your buddies into the basement to show them the cool computer in the closet, with all the hot new features. The computer version of popping the hood to see what make stuff run.
