Desktop doesn't matter
Although I'm a 99.99% linux user, I have a backup Win2k partition on this machine. The only time I use Winders is when I need Dreamweaver, or one or two programs that has no linux equal (Like 'The Godfather') The last time I used Windows was an odd-ball web site, that I needed for class. For some reason the java on linux wasn't comparable with it, but the one on Windows was.

But does the desktop matter? Pretty much not, and never really did. Desktops don't get on the web, or do your work, or play your games, programs do, and always did. Sure you can be a MS zombie, and only use their stuff. But if you can get open source, and/or clones, then does MS matter? Nope, Windows? Nada. Bing? More like "bling" Who cares? Google, Metacrawler, and IXQuick does the same job. Basically Microsoft doesn't matter anymore.

like you, I switched to all open-source and freeware nearly 10 years ago, and even today I don't use anything but. Dreamweaver and Win2k came from a bankrupted company auction. Thankfully they work even today, so why upgrade?

I have little hope for SaaS judging by the brainless designed sites I've used in companies I work for, so I don't think Cloud also is going to be that fantastic for a long while either. Desktop will stay for awhile yet. But the OS doesn't matter anymore.
