Desktops matter a lot to me, but...
It's the OS that doesn't matter to me as an experienced computer user. If you can learn one, you can learn them all. As for why I solely use desktops, it's a matter of physical limitations with smaller devices, including laptops.

As for GUIs, I've used GEM (Digital Research, remember DR-DOS, even CP/M?), Mac System 6.0.x & 7.x.x, Windows 3.x, 9x, NT 3.51 & 4.0, XP Pro & Home, and several incarnations of Linux, beginning with Red Hat 6, then the various Fedoras, and finally Debian and Ubuntu.

I'd say I'm pretty much OS agnostic. If it's free, I'm going to use it. Plus I build my own boxes. Right now my main box runs Ubuntu 9.04. Only thing Windows needs to do for me now is access DRM content. I can live without it.
