All books require 100% attention
Books exists to entertain or to provide the reader with a viewpoint.

If it's to entertain, it is self-evident the maximum effect is when a person is engrossed in the narrative until the conclusion.

If it is to educate, then clearly giving a book undivided attention is important for understanding a viewpoint or thesis in it's entirety.

This has absolutely *nothing* to do with challenging what you are reading. It is only logical that you have to fully understand what an author is proposing before you rip it to shreds, if that is your intent. And it is inescapable that to gain that understanding, you must comprehend the thesis as the author intended it to be presented (aka by the sequence of chapters in the book).
