When I had just started my first .com, we were very successful. So successful we brought our servers to their knees and essentially killed the project before it had a chance to root.

It sounds like this might be what is happening with Hadoop. While Hadoop helps to alleviate server load using distributed computing as a solution, the resource of the actual coders may fall apart. Hadoop could be forked by several of the larger players mentioned.

Synthesis is the second requirement, after consensus, to a successful open source project.
