For desktop, proprietary software costs a low.
For microsoft desktop products, software costs are an afterthought. Computer that I have been using for almost four years would be entirely covered by two days of my salary.

But you are right that Open source causes deflation. Microsoft was forced to keep Win WP, and sell it at a lower price to keep linux from gaining foothold in netbook space.
