Most aren't used? Firefox pushes
Automatic updating is enabled by default in Firefox, so the answer to your question "But how many take advantage of this?" is everyone who hasn't deliberately turned it off. As for "And how tied is Firefox to updating for security purposes?" the answer is totally - an update is usually pushed within a week of any new vulnerability being reported, sometimes less.

Mozilla has received tons of complaints from users who've been interrupted by auto-updates popping up while they're in the middle of something, but they remain firm in keeping them as default. I suppose they have a good point; any user who can't figure out how to change a setting so they are informed of available updates instead of having them downloaded automatically probably needs to have updates rammed down their throat.
