But what this article is about is how difficult it is to keep 3rd party applications (both Free Open Source Software and Proprietary) up to date, with patches, and other updates, on a Microsoft Windows System.

As I and others demonstrated, it is trivially easy on a Linux system.

The issue at hand is that Most managers out there are trapped in a Microsoft mindset: That is, to them, a desktop computer and a Microsoft operating system are the same thing. Most of these people are either not aware that there is actually a better way to do things, they have finally become aware of [Free] Open Source Software, where the Free means no cost, and are using it on their Microsoft Windows desktops and servers, and... of course they are are discovering the gotcha of Microsoft Windows... Security is someone else's problem, and so are software updates for 3rd party software.

The real solution to the problem is not to spend all that money they saved by going the [Free] Open Source Software route, by subscribing to some 3rd party update service. The solution to their problem is to take it one step further, and get rid of Microsoft Windows Desktops and replace them with a genuinely secure system that has a built in update service that takes care of both core components and 3rd party applications.... GNU/Linux.
