aren't used?
I would like to see your stats on what makes you think automatic update services aren't used on Linux distros. Your claim seems completely ludicrous to me. It appears based on assumptions.

Here we don't directly use our vendor's software update repository. Its a drain on bandwidth to have a bunch of machines hitting the Internet for software patches we can mirror internally. But we still use the built-in automatic update service and we force the machines to install all updates it finds. But we rsync our vendor's APT repository internally every day and can decide whether or not to disable certain updates. We also deploy our own applications and update them automatically using APT. Its quite reliable and seamless and anyone who doesn't use something similar is insane. Its so exceedingly trivial to setup that I can't fathom people would disable it.

The users have no choice in the matter, either. Whatever updates I place on our internal APT repository get installed that evening by all the machines. At worst, the user may have to reboot the next day if its a kernel update. And the system warns the user of that fact at login and via periodic notification bubbles.
