RE: The biggest threat to open source in 2009
I don't understand what is being said. I am a Unix Engineer and some of the systems I support are Red Hat systems. We have a RH proxy server for updates (think wsus for windows) that constantly has updated pushed to it from the RH Network and every month all RH systems run up2date against that server. The updates are not just for the Linux kernel but for everything that is part of the RH distro as well as custom packages that we have.

There seems to be a distinction being made between push vs pull of the updates, but the only folks that push updates are enterprises that have a wsus server or equiv. Most others have the automatic updates turned on, which is a pull mechanism. In that respects, Linux is just like Windows in that it pulls updates from a distribution repository.

So it's just not true that there is no update service for Open Source projects.
