This article seemed a little strange to me too at first and left me questioning whether those updates pushed down to my Ubuntu client and kindly divided into critical and optional for the less computer-literate amongst us were in fact a mere illusion. However; I think Dana's point revolves around there not being a enough modern, regularly-maintained open-source enterprise level solutions that administer the task of pushing updates to clients.

tracy anne made the following statement:
It can't be Linux, because Linux is Open source Software, and the Open Source applications that run on it are documented, they are also updated automatically by the package manager, either per desktop, in the case of stand alone Linux systems, or under the control of the System Administrator, from a local repository, in the case of Enterprise systems.

Out of curiosity; tracy anne - would you and any others who currently work in an Enterprise that deploys a significant amount of centrally administered Linux clients be so kind as to post your real-life examples of how patches and updates for both the Linux OS and its applications are automatically pushed through to clients. That would about close the matter once and for all.
