Sun's best assets are the talented people the company is laying off and the IP the company is giving away.

It may take a village to raise a child, but without parents the outcome is uncertain. Sun may have emancipated software to open source, but without parental guidance it could be controlled by Fagin... uhm... IBM.

And I'm not certain "the community" is willing to act in loco parentis for Sun's wayward progeny.
