Where Linux beats out other *nix competitors most
is in driver support. Just about any off-the-shelf hardware can be made to work and work well with Linux. That, plus the fact that you'd be dealing with another single entity if you chose Solaris, is why OEMs will always favor Linux over other kernels that do indeed have it over Linux in other areas.
