... as a result of open source is? If you're going to assert that proprietary companies have suffered because of open source, you should estimate how many $ billions more revenue some of the most profitable, high margin corporations would have had if open source had not existed.
The null hypothesis would be, Open source is a method of development reducing expenses. In part, it is used to increase the profits of certain companies which can obtain higher margins on sales of other product lines.
In part, it is also a way to create a business which can be sold at a substantial profit to the large proprietary (or open source "distributor") companies which are the software industry.
It's possible that the reduction in sales of proprietary products is limited to sales which would otherwise have been made, as with Linux servers vs Windows. That competition is not decided, of course, so any sales foregone may be obtained in the future.
