Why is it that many feel that companies should/must
share software code, yet they draw the line at sharing anything which maintaines their own income?

I do not see Boeing sharing design or manufacturing techniues with Airbus, KFC and Coca-Cola keep their recipies under lock and key, and many here would never give out company secrects with a competitor in fear that their own company may be impacted finacially.

Yet with software it is somehow bad to keep one's code to themselves.

What about the value of purchasing proprietary software, and never having to think about it again? Is there not any value in that?
