Extrapolating from a point
Dana, you're looking at this from a very parochial point of view. The carriers only have a say in one country on Earth: the United States, and the US is very very far from leading the mobile space. As in, maybe not dead last but working at it.

Elsewhere the carriers have bupkis to say in the matter, and phones are quite a bit cheaper TCO-wise. What's more, since over-the-counter phone sales aren't undercut by carriers' leadin pricing or tied to a two-year contract cycle people actually change them more often.

If you want to see innovation in the mobile space, you're going to have to look outside of UTC-5:00
