Corporate users verses home users
The two Internets already exist. We call corporate in house Internets 'intranets' and we call the other net, the internet. In the corporate world, internet information server is the web server of choice. It does both jobs of serving up local content and extranet content.

The people that complain about Microsoft's dominance can and should pull together better intranet tools if they want to compete with Microsoft. That is happening in the Linux world and it is getting easier and easier to have it all from Linux. When end users can put together an intranet that is both Microsoft and open source friendly the war will be on. Until then, Microsoft wins because of its integration of applications with IIS and the fact that the latest version can do standards based web sites as well as intranet sites. IIS is also quite easy to setup and use and it, too, is free for in house use.

Apache is technically superior to IIS but IIS is quite battle hardened and comes with all copies of XP and Vista. The dominance of IIS on the extranet, though, is ending. It is still quite secure on the corporate front, though, but when newer tools show up, IIS will be toast but that is going to take another five to ten years. But an all in one intranet/extranet set of tools is quite easy to set up in the Linux world and newer, more powerful parallel tools like Erlang and Mnesia would be an ideal place to start with intrandets and extranets both.

Because of the way that Erlang's web server Yaws handles it's parallel operations through messaging instead of shared memory pools it can handle huge web attacks and it automatically spreads itself out over multiple servers and creates both a secure and easy to replicate system or services that cannot be taken down by denial of service attacks.

Apache dies when hit with about seven to ten thousand user floods. Yaws just kept on going on up to 85,000 simultaneous users. These attacks are there because of how the web is currently structured and are the fault of how the web software is set up today. By moving to tools like Erlang and Yaws you can make the web much safer and far more robust. That's both the intranet and extranet.
