Perhaps I am overly sensitive because I listed to a lecture by Gandhi's grandson yesterday, but I don't see why 'strike out at opponents' is a reasonable analogy. Coders of open source are just out to make useful applications they share with others. There may be fan boys that verbally 'strike out at opponents', but you may as well hold Microsoft accountable for Loverock's inflammatory comments on these forums.

Besides, there is no 'single concept' - listen to the divergent opinions of RMS and Theo de Raadt for example. They peacefully coexist with each following related, but by no means, identical concepts in their software and philosophy.
