No such thing as a free lunch....
While I don't lay all the blame on open source, I do blame open source for many of the problems with VMWare?s business model. It is very difficult to plan when you have ?free? products in the market place that claim to be free and open in competition with you. As the market has repeatedly shown, many of these ?free? products eventually evolve into commercial products in the end.

The business model for open source is the following:
1. Great idea
2. Dupe programmers into working on it for free
3. Splinter off commercial version.
4. Screw duped programmers out of the profit.

This has been the model for so many open source projects that I wonder how much longer it will take the programmers to wake up. Competition is great, I don?t expect open source to ever go away, but I don?t like seeing programmers get the shaft when it comes to compensation.

Sooner or later people are going to realize that it?s the same wolves running the show, they are just wearing a different costumes.
