I don't think Acquia will ruin Drupal by setting up
corporate backing and support. It's really all about the
needs of the customer. As a tech-savvy user of Drupal for
many of my personal web sites such as 360matches.com, I
find that I don't need a support system around me in order
to maintain features, functionality, and stability.

However, large companies that are dependent upon Drupal
or even thinking about moving to Drupal might feel a bit
more at ease if they know they can obtain professional
services if and when they are needed.

Much like using CentOS instead of a commercially
supported version of RedHat, if you have the ability to
support the platform "in house" then you can still go with
the free, unsupported option. Of course, you also have the
Drupal community at large to lean on as well.
