In the case of ditching Wintel...
...you just do it. Buy a naked computer (or if you have an old one lying around, use that), take an inventory of the hardware so you know what drivers you need, use the evil FDISK program to obliterate any current OS installation and then Linux the box. Then devote a fixed amount of time installing software, configuring and otherwise insuring that this new box can replace your existing one and that you're comfortable with it. When everything is working, blow away the Windows installation on your main box and Linux that too (or BSD it, or whatever).

It really is possible to ditch Windows if you have, are willing to acquire, or can buy the knowhow and are willing to make some sacrifices (the family PC at my house has been running Linux for almost 4 years now). Seems that your household is more technically savvy than most, so you should have an easier time of it (assuming that's what you really want to do).
