- An Apache Web Server in the palm of your hand
-
If anyone thinks Google/Android doesn't have competition, think again (Nokia to acquire Trolltech).
Google or any other bidder can own open spectrum Block C if they can pony up the quid, but if not, it reverts to closed spectrum rules. I certainly hope there results an open spectrum. If not, Verizon has moved to open up their CDMA network. They may not have had anything to say about the decision since they are owned by VodaPhone.
Regardless of the outcome, Nokia maintains about a 3-5 year lead in the overall cell phone market share and technology advancements.
"If you?re going to move a ton of data through your mobile device, and store a lot of data there, you?re no longer talking primarily about a phone. You?re talking about a PC."
Indeed.
The Nokia N95 is already there. As far as I am concerned it IS a PC. Take a look a the device's specifications here.
Essentially, it uses the same Texas Instruments Multi-core ARM processor as the Nokia N800/810 (running Debian Linux), the High Performance OMAP2420.
No unlocking is required. Battery is replaceable. Can operate with just one hand. The N95's operating system, Symbian S60 3rd Edition, is a mature well-supported application development platform--so much so that the recently released Open C libraries enable porting of applications utilizing POSIX.
What does this mean? For starters your mobile phone becomes not only a PC, it can become just about anything else that is POSIX-compliant and portable, such as, oh, say an Apache Mobile Web Server.
Yep. That's right. An Apache Web Server.
In fact mine is running right now here.
Put the N95 along side the iPhone and you begin to comprehend just how much the iPhone is a 'toy' and, most of all, a dongle.
