An open source star really could help to increase awarness of Linux, and
free software in general. Linux Torvalds does not want to be a star, and though not as abrasive as Richard, still abrasive. Eric Raymond is a great writer, but he does not have a star stage presence. Sergey Brin and Larry Page stay behind the scenes, and probably do not have the stage presence anyway. We might have hoped that Mark Shuttleworth could have been the guy, but no. Ditto for the new RedHat CEO.

But, we really could use a guy with star power that could deliver keynotes like Steve Jobs, and talk about all of the things for Linux (and free software) at CES or elsewhere.

But, then again, maybe rather than a star, a BRAND might be the best thing to promote Linux and Open Source. The premier brand being Google. Google is putting their brand on Android, but also could put their brand on a Google PC eventually. A Google branded internet device with a Google branded version of Ubuntu would be the way to to that. But, Google needs to groom somebody to be the keynote speaker, the public image of Google or at least Google branded internet devices.
