Generally true of volunteer efforts
For many years, I've been an amateur musician and as such, have played in a number of community bands, and most recently a community orchestra (I play two instruments). One thing I've noticed is that while the conductor does need to be in charge of what's played and how, and there needs to be a manager in charge of the business arrangements, people who throw their weight around and fail to consider the opinions of others find that they end up with many fewer musicians to work with (I saw this first hand several years ago). Constant infighting between leaders is particularly damaging.

If your people aren't drawing paychecks, then you'd better keep them happy in other ways.
