Remember when Stephen King...
... published a book on the internet? Most people chose free then, as well.

Relying on people to choose to pay is not an effective business model. Particularly when the product is considered likely to be disposeable after one or two uses.

Software relying on voluntary donations also doesn't generate significant revenues, to my knowledge.

Seems that the most effective model is paying a required amount when obtaining the product.
