Gag me
E-mail has nothing to do with OpenOffice.org -- in fact, it has nothing to do with office suites, except that Microsoft chose to bundle their groupware with their office suite.

If all we needed was groupware, we already have it.

Unfortunately, too many companies have chosen to lock themselves into proprietary groupware systems, such that it's necessary to have a particular client for the corporate environment. Doesn't matter whether it's GroupFoolish, Bloated Goats, or Viral Exchange -- you have to run the desktop that goes with the server, and you have to use the server that goes with the desktop.

Well, guess what: Microsoft has the desktop locked up. Which is why their server is #1.

What the world does not need is to have a Bloated Goats client welded onto OpenOffice.org -- it's already loaded down with too many features that most users don't need, such as Java and (coming soon) Mono [1].

Here's a notion: if IBM has anything useful to add to the picture, such as knowledge of how the wireline protocols for IBM and Microsoft groupware, how about they DOCUMENT THE STINKING PROTOCOLS so we can choose to support them (or not) without reverse-engineering either the protocols or the code?

[1] Hey, Miguel: if you wonder why we're not excited by your new toy from Redmond, you might consider that we're still waiting for you to finish the Exchange Connector. You know, the one from about three toys back? I wonder what shiny thing you'll drop the current toy for.
