I guess I see this not as FLOSS projects/companies being made more closed, but traditionally closed companies recognizing that they need to become more open. Yes, this is a "mixed source" environment, but when you add up the mixture you are now closer to FLOSS than before the mixture.

This appears to me to be a matter of some incumbent companies understanding the "Innovators Dilema" and deciding to not be replaced by new innovators. The innovation of FLOSS is not the technology, but the methodologies for the production, distribution and funding of knowledge.

Even Microsoft is far more open than they were a decade ago, and Microsoft is often held up as being the most successful software firm in their legacy methodology for the production, distribution and funding of software.

Existing in a free/libre market, I'll continue to use Xen on my servers as long as it has adequate community support. Switching to something else if it does go closed will be trivial, but my prediction is that this deal will greatly strengthen the FLOSS Xen project, just as contributions from IBM and RedHat did.
