I don't see a downside for the size of the kernel tree
Yes, in theory there is a downside once a kernel tree gets too big, but I haven't seen any evidence that Linux has gotten too big for its britches. The number of kernel programmers plus their high skill (not to mention the hierarchy in place) has enabled it to get this large without too many problems, and I can see it getting even larger.

And this large size even has advantages in that a common skill set can get you that much farther.
