Journalism vs Blogging...
A call for us to write more. I think there is a lot of writing (I BLOG primarily at http://digital-copyright.ca ), so volume of information isn't the issue. The job of the journalist becomes more like the job of a librarian : helping their patrons to find the information they are looking for among the massive amount of information that is out there.

Advertiser paid media is always going to have a hard time. We are all going to second-guess being critical of someone that directly or indirectly funds us, and we will be giving them the benefit of the doubt.

I realize I do that with companies like Google. I've met many Google employees at Ottawa Linux Symposium events in the past, and think their Summer of Code project is amazing. I wish governments would adopt this type of program to introduce students to real computing through FLOSS participation (not the isolation of non-FLOSS development). If a non-FLOSS participating company were doing the same things as Google I might be far more skeptical of them, but when I don't have enough information to be critical I give them the benefit of the doubt.

Then again, I don't claim to be a journalist, and I am certainly not unbiased when it comes to FLOSS. http://flora.ca
