The difference is...

...that the freedom resides in the software, not in the person using it. I'm not "free" to do whatever I want with the software; the software is "free" from any control by me. Some might call that anthropomorphism - attributing a human characteristic (the desire to be free) to an inanimate object (software). But I won't.

A better analogy would be socialism, not communism - using the state (via copyright law) to enforce equality. As opposed to using the state to enforce individual rights (the current "proprietary software" system).
