We could go a lot further than we have
I think the mistake people make to assume that automation of software development will relieve you of the burden of having to think.

Obviously this will never be the case (as Frederick Brooks correctly observed, "there is not silver bullet").

However the important question should surely be not whether we should stop thinking but whether we are thinking about the right things.

Various pieces of systems software already allow us to think more about what we want and less about how the computer actually executes the tasks to get us what we want. This is what one might call "axiomatic" or "horizontal" reuse, as opposed to reuse that is accented towards a specific application.

I think this is the key to greater productivity and reliability in software (not to mention less of a disconnect between requirements and execution), but you are still going to need well educated people to develop the systems software and well educated people to use it effectively.
