Well, sure.
Quoting:

"[Mr. Fleury] built JBOSS around superstar programmers, committers who he felt deserved more from the fruits of their labors."

Well, this is open source, after all.
Some companies will make some profit, some people will make some money. But only the best, and not too much.

Continuing:
"All of which leads to this question. Are the programmers, the individualists, the crazy visionaries doomed to fail in a world that will be dominated by corporate open source companies?"

Yes, of course.

Open source is following the same course of evolution as any other industry, with dominance by the big players, which will buy out the good ideas. Like JBoss.

The amounts at stake and numbers of people gainfully employed may be lower, but the ordinary course of business applies.

Quoting:

"Who will gain the financial benefits open source offers, the suits or the people doing the work?"

The suits.

Why do you think they're in this culvert rather than in proprietary, where there's much more money?

This is like YouTube or MySpace. Most attempts won't be worth much, but sometimes you can hit big very quickly. When you sell out.

And you have few employees to console if you fail.
