Interesting story...
...but I don't think the threat in question would have stood up in court. My understanding is that trademark holders can insist that their marks be identified in 3rd-party communications, but they can't stop people from using them to refer to the products in question (but then again, I'm not a lawyer).

Mind you, that won't stop trademark holders from making frivolous legal threats; only calling their bluff will do that.
