altruism and closed source
Bill Gates has to date given away $27 billion to a foundation that will work toward the betterment of the under privileged.

Also Gates has said that he would give away the rest of his fortune (currently $54 billion) to the cause.

Warren Buffet will give $44 billion to Bill & Melinda Gates Foundatation.

What altruism has open source done.
"Open source projects drive out costs and bring savings", thats not altrusim. I havent seen any cost savings in open source. Even if it does cut costs, its just business.

I havent seen Marc Fleury give away a dollar for any cause or for that matter most other causes.

Infact the father of open source himself says open source is not about free as in beer, its freedom to make changes etc. However in reality its not total freedom - there are rules to be followed, a licence to adhere to. Infact its just another business model.

If you count all the money thats given away by business (closed source business model) and the total benefits of the open source model, the open source model cant even hold a candle.
